NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg sharply criticized Russia’s decision to close the alliance’s office in Moscow. This decision does not promote either dialogue or mutual understanding, he said at a press conference in Brussels on Wednesday, October 20. At the same time, Stoltenberg noted that the alliance will nevertheless continue to strive for dialogue with Russia, including through the NATO-Russia Council.

“Relations between NATO and Russia are now at their lowest level since the end of the Cold War, but for us this is not really an argument against dialogue. We firmly believe that it is at a time when tensions are high and everything is difficult that dialogue is important. “, – emphasized Stoltenberg.

Suspension of the work of representative offices

The NATO secretary general reacted in this way to the decision of Russia to suspend the work of its mission to NATO and to close the alliance office in Moscow in response to the withdrawal of the accreditation by the North Atlantic Alliance of eight employees of the Russian mission to NATO in Brussels.

Stoltenberg at a press conference again defended NATO’s decision to revoke the accreditation of Russian representatives, pointing out that it was made on the basis of intelligence: the Russian representatives are, according to him, intelligence officers. At the same time, the NATO Secretary General did not provide any details.
