The war in Ukraine could last for several years, NATO said on Sunday, with the Alliance calling for widespread support against Kiev against Russian forces.

NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said the supply of modern weapons to the Ukrainian army would help liberate the eastern Donbas region from Russian control.

After failing to occupy the capital Kyiv, the Russians concentrated on an effort to completely conquer the province, some of which was already under the control of pro-Russian separatists before the February 24 invasion.

“We must prepare for the fact that the war may last for years. We must not stop supporting Ukraine,” Stoltenberg said today. “Even if the price is high, not only militarily but also in terms of rising energy and food prices.”

Fear of “Ukrainian exhaustion”

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, who visited Kiev over the weekend, suggested training Ukrainian forces, saying it was important for his country to provide long-term support, and warned of the possibility of “Ukrainian exhaustion” if the war lasted a long time.

In an opinion piece in the London Sunday Times, Johnson said it should be made sure that Ukraine continues to receive weapons, equipment, ammunition and training at a higher rate than the enemy.

“It will all depend on whether Ukraine can improve its ability to defend itself faster than Russia can improve its ability to attack,” Johnson wrote.

There is no doubt about victory

Ukrainian President Zalansky, for his part, said in a telegram video that he had visited troops in several areas on the southern front, saying “they have no doubt about our victory. We will not give up the south for anyone, and we will take back everything we have.”
