Mehak Parvez from Chennai has invented a unique ‘Sun Harvested Coolrooms’. It is a sustainable alternative to cold storage that can keep fruits and vegetables fresh even without electricity.

Crops are produced in large quantities in our country, but keeping them safe after harvesting is a big problem. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations (UN), crops worth about US$ 14 billion are wasted every year in India. In such a situation, the easiest way to preserve the wasted crops is to have a good cold storage, but large and modern cold storages do not exist in small villages. On the other hand, in the cold storage of cities, there is a huge consumption of air cooler and electricity. 19 year old Mehak Parvez has found a sustainable solution to this problem. They have created a natural fridge!

His invention is completely eco-friendly. It is a grid-less technology called SunHarvested CoolRooms. According to Mehak, this technology keeps vegetables fresh three times longer than conventional storage.

Growing up in Chennai, Mehak often saw crop failure in her mother’s two-acre farm. Then he, taking inspiration from the hot and cold climate of Chennai, decided to do a small experiment.

He told that the day temperature in Chennai is 45 degrees whereas in the evening the wind becomes pleasant and the temperature cools down. After a little reading, he came to know that it is caused by convection currents between land and sea. After knowing about this technology of cold air, he decided to help the farmers with it.

He tried the same method with a draft tube, a cement room, and a chimney. After making three different prototypes, they finally got success.

Each part of his draft tube was made in Chennai and then assembled together. Since Sunharvested Coolroom technology is a sustainable option for storage, it also helps in reducing the gas released from the refrigerator.

Mehak’s invention has also won the Lexus Design Award for 2023 under the ‘Eco-Innovation’ category. If their natural fridge invention is used on a large scale, then the waste coming out of agriculture can be greatly reduced and that too without harming the environment.
