A week after the start of the school year, it’s still chaos within the Iles-de-Loire college, in Saint-Sébastien-sur-Loire near Nantes. Since a large part of the teachers exercised their right to withdraw from the day of resumption, the school year has still not really started in this public establishment which has more than 450 students. It must be said that according to teachers and parents, the conditions are not met for teaching. “We only had one hour of French and one hour of history and geography today,” two 6th grade students said this Tuesday. The rest of the time, we stayed in the courtyard. Even after eight days, we still don’t know all our teachers! There are classes you can’t go to. »
The cause is odors described as nauseating which are felt on the floors of the main building, following water damage which has poisoned the life of the college since a violent storm in the summer of 2022. And which raise fears for the health of its occupants: “This causes red eyes in some students and adults, an increase in asthma, headaches, etc.,” reports the text of a petition launched online. This return to school is disrupted, because despite the work carried out during the year and the summer, nothing seems to have changed. »
Four air purifiers
The Loire-Atlantique departmental council confirms that 300,000 euros of work has already been carried out (changing ceiling tiles, cleaning mold, etc.). But this Monday, after several demonstrations by teachers and parents, the community recognizes that “bad odors continue to appear and disappear randomly” and announces having identified “a new possible source of bad odors”, caused by new mold spotted at the false ceilings.
Additional work will therefore be undertaken as soon as possible, such as cleaning the sheet metal and strengthening the air flow. The department, which also plans to install four air purifiers from Wednesday, is trying to reassure. “It has been proven that there is no respiratory danger and the resumption of classes is entirely possible,” he believes. The work necessary to permanently eliminate bad odors will be organized so as not to impact teaching. »
A reconstruction of the Iles-de-Loire college is planned for 2026.
