Nauterra, the Calvo brand food production company, together with the United Nations Population Fund, UNFPA El Salvador, participated in the official presentation of the “Get to Zero” initiative, with the aim of reducing the pregnancy rate in girls and adolescents.

Every year, UNFPA carries out the study called “Pregnancy Map for Girls and Adolescents”, an x-ray of all the municipalities of El Salvador. The results show that the highest number of cases is in the east of the country. “Getting to Zero” seeks to coordinate all actors, governmental and non-governmental, in efforts to end this situation that limits the development opportunities of girls and adolescents, focusing their efforts in municipalities with persistent rates of teenage pregnancy.

“In our factory in La Unión, more than 78% of the staff are women, many of whom are heads of household; For this reason, we have carried out various joint activities with UNFPA since 2016. Similarly, we have the Luis Calvo Sanz socio-sports school which has benefited more than 4,500 minors in 13 years; Together with our colleague Ayuda en Acción, we train them in values, coexistence, as well as providing psychological care and training to adolescents on gender, sexual and reproductive rights issues. Also, we provide training to parents or caregivers to teach them about positive discipline and child protection,” said Gabriela Carías, Sustainability and Communication Coordinator at Nauterra, listing the actions related to pregnancy prevention .

The initiative “Nil Pregnancy in Girls and Adolescents” considers it important to prevent efforts from different spaces, sectors and actors at territorial and national level who are agents of social change in order to prevent sexual violence, unions and pregnancy soon , and by strengthening the capacity of the family and the community to be protective environments for girls, boys and adolescents, especially for girls and adolescents in vulnerable situations. “Be on us because we will continue to do our part to make a difference and be agents of social change so that our girls and teenagers have better opportunities,” reiterated Gabriela Carías.
