The lawyers of the Russian oppositionist Alexei Navalny, sentenced to a colony, have appealed the conviction in the case of libel against the veteran of the Great Patriotic War Ignat Artemenko. On Wednesday, December 1, Interfax reported that the cassation appeal was filed by Vadim Kobzev with reference to the press service of the Second General Jurisdiction Court of Cassation. The date of the meeting has not yet been set, it is indicated below.

On the eve of the Basmanny Court of Moscow rejected the complaint of Navalny’s lawyers to initiate a criminal case on fraud on an especially large scale. The court decided that the case under part 4 of article 159 of the Criminal Code was initiated legally, lawyer Veronika Polyakova wrote on Twitter. Navalny himself took part in the meeting via video link.

It is expected that on December 1, the Basmanny Court will rule on another complaint by Navalny – on the initiation of a criminal case on contempt of a judge.

Pursuit of Navalny

Russia is currently investigating a number of criminal cases against Alexei Navalny and his associates. In particular, a large-scale fraud case was initiated on December 29, 2020 – one day before the expiration of the probationary period in the Yves Rocher case. Navalny and his team are suspected of embezzling donations worth 356 million rubles. It became known about the initiation of a contempt of court case in May 2021. We are talking about the alleged insult to Vera Akimova, the magistrate of the section N321 of the Babushkinsky district of Moscow, who found Navalny guilty of slandering the veteran.

In February, a magistrate judge sentenced Alexei Navalny to a fine of 850,000 rubles in a libel case. The case was initiated after Navalny called the heroes of the RT TV channel’s propaganda video about amendments to the Constitution “corrupt lackeys” and “traitors”, in which Ignat Artemenko, among others, starred. The UK considered that Navalny’s comment denigrated the honor and dignity of the veteran.

This verdict was actually combined with the decision of the Simonovsky Court of Moscow, which at the beginning of February granted the petition of the Moscow Department of the Federal Penitentiary Service to replace Navalny with a suspended sentence of 3.5 years in a general regime colony – that is, for a term that was assigned to the oppositionist in the case in 2014 “Yves Rocher”. Given that Navalny had not yet served his sentence in the Yves Rocher case, he was sentenced to three years and six months in prison with a fine of 850,000 rubles. Taking into account Navalny’s stay under house arrest and custody, he will have to spend about 2.5 years in a colony.
