Naver executives met with People Power Party lawmakers and said that they felt a sense of responsibility as a portal company regarding the allegations of news platform bias and abuse of the portal’s monopoly position, and that they would take responsibility and actively work to resolve the allegations.

The People Power Party’s Portal Unfairness Reform Task Force (TF) visited Naver’s 1784 building in Seongnam, Gyeonggi Province on the morning of the 19th and met with Naver CEO Choi Soo-yeon and others.

On this day, Naver’s CEO Choi, ESG policy director Chae Seon-ju, and policy and crisis management (RM) director Yoo Bong-seok attended the meeting. From the People’s Power Party, TF chairman Rep. Kang Min-guk, along with Reps. Kang Myeong-gu, Koh Dong-jin, and Kim Jang-gyeom attended.

When the People Power Party lawmakers called for public responsibility, such as creating a fair portal news ecosystem and coexistence of small business owners, in their opening remarks, Representative Yoo said, “We are not neglecting it and are making a lot of efforts, but it seems that there are still shortcomings,” and added, “I will work in a direction that will resolve (the lawmakers’ concerns) even a little.”

In a closed-door meeting after both sides made their statements, the TF reportedly requested Naver management to report the results of the operation of the ‘Naver News 3rd Algorithm Review Committee’ as soon as possible. The 3rd Algorithm Review Committee, which was launched in June of last year, was scheduled to announce the results of the news search algorithm review at the end of last year.

In addition, Naver said that it will ensure fairness and objectivity in news services through the News Innovation Forum and that it will provide sufficient explanations to the TF until fairness is strengthened.

Meanwhile, Rep. Kang Min-guk met with reporters after the interview and said, “Naver will ensure fairness and objectivity in news services through the News Innovation Forum, and I said that I will fully explain (when meeting with lawmakers in the future) any issues that were not answered clearly.”

He also indirectly conveyed his intention to listen to a sufficient explanation regarding the measures to protect small business owners and news bias, and if that is not enough, to call Naver founder and Global Investment Officer (GIO) Lee Hae-jin as a witness or reference person at the regular National Assembly’s Political Affairs Committee scheduled for next month.
