Navy Joins Effort to Combat Bangkok’s PM2.5 Pollution

Thailand’s Navy is lending a hand – and personnel – to a unique effort to tackle the dangerous levels of PM2.5 air pollution choking Bangkok and surrounding areas.

  • The Navy is supporting the Royal Rainmaking Operations Center.
  • Volunteers are preparing and transporting substances for cloud seeding.
  • The initiative aims to alleviate the PM2.5 dust crisis impacting air quality.
  • The operation is based in Rayong Province, east of Bangkok.

The Thai Navy is actively participating in climate modification efforts designed to improve air quality in and around Bangkok. Personnel from the Anti-Aircraft and Coast Guard Command are volunteering to support the operations of the Eastern Royal Rainmaking Operations Center, directly addressing the escalating problem of fine particulate matter (PM 2.5) pollution. This collaboration highlights a multi-sector approach to public health and environmental concerns.

Preparing for Rainmaking Operations

On Monday, January 19, 2026, Captain Chatchawet Kittipeerachon, Commander of the 1st Anti-Aircraft Regiment, Anti-Aircraft and Coast Guard Command, led a team of volunteers in preparing and transporting royal rain substances for use in aircraft. This logistical support is crucial for weather modification efforts aimed at inducing rainfall and washing away the harmful PM2.5 particles that have been plaguing the region.

What is PM2.5? PM2.5 refers to fine inhalable particles, with diameters that are generally 2.5 micrometers and smaller. These particles are a component of smog and can cause serious health problems.

The Navy’s involvement underscores its commitment to addressing environmental challenges and providing relief to citizens affected by poor air quality. Officials emphasize that this is a collaborative effort, demonstrating a unified response to protect the well-being and safety of the population.

A Coordinated Response to Air Pollution

Support for these missions reflects the Navy’s broader role in solving environmental problems and alleviating public suffering. The operation, based at the Department of Royal Rainmaking and Agricultural Aviation in Samnak Thon Subdistrict, Ban Chang District, Rayong Province, represents a concrete step towards improving the quality of life for residents in Bangkok and the surrounding areas.
