He assured that the attorney general, Rodolfo Delgado, “is raiding and extinguishing the domain of all the properties of Alfredo Cristiani.”

Bukele accused Cristiani of being corrupt and “one of the politicians who did the most damage to our country” and that they would seek him to return “what was stolen.” According to Bukele, the Prosecutor’s Office would intervene two properties and a drugstore owned by the former president.

Cristiani -whose whereabouts are unknown- ruled El Salvador under the banner of the right-wing Nationalist Republican Alliance (ARENA) in the last stage of the civil war (1980-1992) and signed peace agreements with the then guerrilla of the Farabundo Martí National Liberation Front (FMLN).

In March 2022, a court of peace in El Salvador ordered the arrest of Cristiani for the massacre of six Jesuit priests, five of them Spanish, and two women in 1989 in the context of the civil war (1980-1992).

Additionally, the Salvadoran president affirmed before the Congress – with an official majority – that a prison will be built for “the corrupt”.

“Just as we have fought the gangs frontally, with all the forces of the State and with all the legal tools we can, without hesitating at any time, so we will also start a frontal war against corruption,” the president declared.

The ruler – who announced in September 2022 that he will seek re-election in 2024 – indicated that “just as we built a prison for terrorists, we will also build a prison for the corrupt.”

Bukele also announced a “reorganization of the administrative political division” of the country, reducing the municipalities of El Salvador from 262 to 44 and from 84 congressmen in the Legislative Branch to 60. These initiatives of the president must be voted on in the Legislative Assembly and ” Both proposals, and I hope they are, should be approved and put into operation before the 2024 general elections,” Bukele added.
