NBA Cup Quarterfinals Set: Thunder Dominate, Injuries Loom Large

The 2025 Emirates NBA Cup quarterfinals are upon us, kicking off Tuesday after the conclusion of group play on november 28th. Four matchups will determine who advances to the semifinals in Las Vegas this Saturday, with compelling storylines unfolding across both conferences.

Eastern Conference Showdowns

The East will see the Miami Heat travel to face the Orlando Magic, followed by a contest between the New York Knicks and the Toronto Raptors. However, the Magic are facing a notable setback with Franz Wagner suffering a high ankle sprain on Sunday, leaving his status for Tuesday’s game – and beyond – uncertain.

“Orlando was finally whole – for a game,” one analyst noted, referencing the recent return of Paolo Banchero from a groin injury. While an MRI revealed no structural damage to Wagner’s ankle, the Magic will be without a key piece, as he averages 22.7 points and 6.1 rebounds this season. Banchero will now be promptly thrust into a larger offensive role, with support expected from Desmond Bane and jalen Suggs.

The Heat, meanwhile, are hoping for a boost from the potential return of guard Tyler Herro (toe) and Davion Mitchell (groin). despite losing four of their last five games, Herro’s presence could be pivotal.

In the North, the Knicks are looking to continue their strong form against a struggling Raptors team. Toronto has dropped five of its past six games after a promising start to the season, and will be without forward RJ barrett due to a knee sprain. Though,New York faces a challenge on the road, where they have struggled, posting a 3-6 record away from Madison Square Garden. The Knicks’ plans are also clouded by the questionable status of big man Karl-Anthony Towns (calf injury), though the return of OG Anunoby from a hamstring strain provides some relief.

Western Conference Battles

Wednesday’s action shifts West, where the oklahoma City Thunder, boasting an impressive 23-1 record, will host the Phoenix Suns. The Los Angeles Lakers will simultaneously welcome the San Antonio Spurs.

the Thunder are proving to be a force of nature, joining the 2015-16 Golden State Warriors and 1969-70 New York Knicks as the third team in NBA history to win at least 23 of their first 24 games. They currently hold an average point differential of plus-16.1, signaling a potential record-breaking season. “It’s an accomplishment just to make the reigning MVP[[Shai Gilgeous-Alexander]play in the fourth quarter this season,” a Western Conference insider stated.

The Lakers, aiming for a historic second NBA Cup championship, will have Luka Doncic back in the lineup after he missed two games for the birth of his daughter. Despite LeBron james‘ recent end to a 1,297-game streak, his presence adds significant firepower to the Lakers’ roster.

The Spurs face a daunting task against the Lakers without Victor Wembanyama, who is recovering from a strained calf. Veteran big man Luke Kornet is expected to anchor San Antonio’s defense in his absence. The Spurs will need to find answers for Doncic, who previously lit up their defense in their first matchup.

Looking Ahead to Las Vegas

The road to the semifinals is fraught with challenges. ESPN’s Basketball Power Index currently projects Orlando as Miami’s most likely first-round playoff opponent, and new York as toronto’s.In the West, phoenix is seen as the Thunder’s most likely first-round opponent, with the Lakers or Spurs as potential second-round matchups.

The thunder’s dominance raises the question: can anyone stop them? And will Wagner’s injury derail Orlando’s hopes of reaching Las Vegas? These are the key questions that will be answered as the NBA Cup quarterfinals unfold, promising a thrilling week of basketball action.
