North Dakota State Football to Join Mountain West Conference in Landmark FCS-to-FBS Move

A pivotal shift in college football is underway as North Dakota State University (NDSU) officially announced Sunday its acceptance into the Mountain West Conference, beginning with the 2026 season as a football-only program. This move represents one of the most significant transitions from the FCS to the FBS level in recent history, signaling a changing landscape for collegiate athletics.

A $15 Million Investment in the Future

The transition won’t come without a financial commitment. NDSU will pay the NCAA a $5 million fee and an additional $10 million to the Mountain West Conference to finalize the agreement. This substantial investment underscores the university’s dedication to elevating its football program and competing at the highest level.

Bison Football: A History of Dominance

North Dakota State has established itself as a powerhouse in the FCS, boasting an impressive record of success. Since 2011, the Bison have secured an astounding 10 National championships, demonstrating consistent excellence and a winning culture. Their prowess isn’t limited to the FCS, either; NDSU holds a 9-5 record against FBS opponents, including five victories over teams from Power Five conferences.

Transition Period and Championship Eligibility

The university will be subject to a mandatory two-year transition period following their entry into the Mountain West. During this time, the program will not be eligible for the College Football Playoff (CFP) or bowl game invitations, except in the unlikely event of insufficient qualified teams. This period allows NDSU to adapt to the increased demands and regulations of FBS competition.

This move by North Dakota State is not merely a change of conference; it’s a statement about the program’s ambition and a testament to its sustained success, poised to reshape the competitive dynamics of college football.
