About 7,000 transit migrants have been unable to leave Niger since the end of July due to the closure of the country’s land borders and airspace. According to Day.Az with reference to TASS, this was reported by the Associated Press (AP) with reference to UN data.

According to him, “nearly 7,000 migrants trying to return home to other African countries are stuck in Niger.” As the agency notes, Niger is an important route for Africans trying to get to Libya and then move to Europe, and for those who are returning home.

“I’m upset [что я застрял в Нигере]because I do not belong to this country,” AP quotes one of the migrants who, after an unsuccessful attempt to cross the Mediterranean to Europe, seeks to get home. According to the agency, there are now about 1.8 thousand people on the streets of Niger’s cities , as the help centers are overcrowded and can no longer receive people.

Earlier, the International Organization for Migration called for the creation of an “emergency humanitarian corridor” for migrants to ease the pressure on overcrowded temporary accommodation centers. The organization recalled that Niger is in a unique position for “intra-regional migratory movements”. Its borders with six neighboring states, with a total length of almost 5.7 thousand km, make Niger “the center of most migration routes in the region.” In the first half of 2023, more than 60 thousand migrants were in the territory of this country, including children who arrived unaccompanied by adults.
