A total of 8,723 samples of the human papilloma virus were processed in the clinical laboratory of the Hospital Vicente Corral Moscoso e Cuenca, meeting the goal by 101.4% within the I Phase of the Program “Prevention of Cervical Cancer, through molecular detection by genotyping of human papillomavirus (HPV) type 16-17 and others”.
The national program has been running since December 2022 through three hospitals in the country, one of them, Vicente Corral Moscoso, an entity of the Ministry of Public Health (MSP) that presented the results of this phase in the presence of national authorities. , zonal and local health.
The hospital was in charge of processing 8,600 samples taken by nine health centers in the provinces of zones 3, 6 and 7. The screening was carried out on women between 30 and 65 years of age, women of childbearing age, with disabilities, from the TRANS population , multiparous, with a family history of cervical cancer and sex workers.
15.46% (1,349) of the processed samples tested positive for HPV and 84.44% (7,366) negative. Of the samples with positivity, 16.68% correspond to the HPV 16 genotype and 5.51% to HPV 18, which are the most aggressive, and 77.81% to 32 other genotypes. The highest percentage of positivity is observed in the range of women between 31 and 40 years of age.
With these results, the Ministry of Health, through its operational units, immediately managed the treatment of the patients. Early detection increases the chances of successful treatment and improves your quality of life.
In this first phase, the hospital had the financial resources necessary to provide a comprehensive service (training, technology, software, logistics, and sample transportation). He adapted the molecular biology area and implemented new high-tech equipment.
The second phase of the program begins in June, expanding coverage. In three months the hospital will process 12,500 samples taken at 17 health units.
