‘Necessary to provide resources for priority sectors’

by times news cr

Political parties resist implementing affirmative actions for priority sectors, so a percentage of the resources ‍allocated by the mayorships could be reserved for projects in the vulnerable sector, ⁤considered the Electoral Institute of Mexico City‍ (IECM), the above, in view of the next Participatory Budget Consultation.

On the “Day for the Defense ‍of Political-Electoral Rights”electoral advisor Sonia Pérez addressed some of the challenges to guarantee the political-electoral rights of people historically discriminated against.

The president of the ⁢ Provisional Commission‌ for Monitoring the Political Participation ‌of Women and Priority Attention Groupsexplained that within political parties there⁣ is still resistance to ⁣applying affirmative actions, since they argue that there are no people from any vulnerable group who can nominate ⁣or propose to know‌ the agenda ‍of ⁢each group‌ to incorporate their demands into their electoral ⁣platforms, but without make room⁤ for them in the⁣ applications.

Pérez highlighted that in the past Electoral Process 2023-2024, managed to ensure that political parties included‌ young‍ people, older ‌adults, people ⁤of sexual diversity, people with disabilities, people from native towns and neighborhoods or indigenous communities, and afromexicanas, in ⁢addition to parity, in the applications.

“We move forward together ⁤with the Institute,⁣ parties and citizens in this respect⁤ for⁤ rights, let’s see it from that perspective, and ‌now what we have to do is ‍analyse⁢ if they are enough⁣ and how we‍ can continue⁣ moving forward for the next electoral process,” he said.

Among ⁤some challenges, the ⁤counselor of ⁤the ‌capital’s Electoral Institute⁢ referred to inclusive campaign events during the electoral processes so that the candidates can get closer to the people they seek to represent.

Another challenge ⁤is related to the Consultation of Participatory Budget, It would be necessary to‍ assess whether a percentage of the resources⁢ assigned by the mayors⁤ for citizen projects would have to be reserved for these⁣ groups, Pérez ⁢added.

Regarding the percentage of public financing that political parties allocate for training and⁢ political education‍ activities, he indicated that it is necessary to include these priority groups in such spending obligations.

How can local communities‍ support⁤ inclusive electoral policies and representation?

Interview ⁢Between Time.news Editor and Sonia Pérez, Electoral Advisor at IECM

Time.news Editor: Welcome, Sonia! We appreciate you taking the time ⁢to speak with us today. Let’s dive ‌right in — you recently discussed some⁤ challenges around political-electoral rights, particularly for historically marginalized groups. Can you elaborate on the specific ⁣hurdles you’ve encountered?

Sonia Pérez: Thank you for having me! One of the‌ most significant challenges is the resistance from‌ political parties‌ to implement affirmative actions. Many parties argue that ⁣there aren’t‌ enough⁤ representatives⁤ from these vulnerable groups who can propose or advocate for their unique agendas. This creates a cycle where these⁢ groups remain underrepresented and their voices go unheard.

Editor: It sounds like a complex issue. What are some real-world ‌examples ⁣of how this resistance impacts the ⁢electoral process?

Pérez: During the recent Electoral Process 2023-2024, while we did manage to secure some inclusion for young people, older adults, and the ⁢LGBTQ+⁢ community, there⁣ still were significant obstacles. It’s not just about including them ⁤in ⁢discussions; we⁢ need to ensure their perspectives shape electoral platforms. Unfortunately, many political parties continue to exclude them from meaningful⁤ participation in nomination processes.

Editor: That is disheartening to hear. You mentioned the‌ need for affirmative action earlier. What specific actions do you believe are necessary to level the playing field for these groups?

Pérez:‍ I believe we should allocate a percentage of resources from the city’s mayorships toward ⁤projects that directly benefit vulnerable ⁤sectors. This could⁢ be a game changer in ensuring these communities not only voice their needs but also ⁣receive tangible support. It would serve to embed their concerns into the political framework.

Editor: That sounds ⁣like a proactive approach! Have you seen any opposition ‌to⁣ these ideas within the‌ political landscape?

Pérez:‍ Yes, there is considerable⁣ pushback. Political parties often contend that resources ‍are limited and they⁣ must focus on broader voter bases to win elections. However, it’s essential to remind ‌them that inclusive policies can actually be ‍beneficial for everyone, fostering a society where diverse voices can contribute to the collective wellbeing.

Editor: Absolutely, and it’s clear that when implemented, these policies can create a more equitable society. As we move toward the next Participatory Budget Consultation, what steps do you think we need⁤ to take to‌ ensure these voices are amplified?

Pérez: Engaging in open⁤ forums and discussions where community members feel safe ⁢to express their needs is crucial. Additionally, training programs for party members on the importance of representation and the benefits it brings can help shift mindsets. The Electoral Institute of‍ Mexico City is eager to facilitate these discussions and push for more inclusive practices.

Editor: Thank⁢ you ‌for sharing your‍ insights, Sonia. Your work ⁢is vital in addressing these issues and advocating for those who have been historically sidelined. How can our readers support these efforts?

Pérez: I appreciate you bringing⁣ attention to this! Readers can advocate⁤ for inclusive policies by engaging with their local representatives, participating in town halls, and continually pushing for transparency in political processes. Every voice counts, and together we can foster change.

Editor: Thank ⁣you for your time ⁤and for the important work you⁣ are doing, Sonia.⁤ We look forward to following the progress and changes in the political landscape!

Pérez: Thank you⁢ for⁢ having me, and for raising‍ awareness about these pressing issues!
