Lausanne: Neeraj Chopra has won a silver medal in another competition. Neeraj, who has been suffering from a groin injury in recent times, was lagging behind in the Lausanne Diamond League. But an advice from senior athlete and opponent Julius Yego proved useful to him. He put in all his effort in the final throw and managed to win the silver. Neeraj threw the javelin 89.49 meters in his sixth attempt. This was his best throw of the season.In fourth place were:
26-year-old Neeraj, who won the silver medal in the Paris Olympics, was in fourth place till the fourth round. He secured the third position by throwing 85.58 meters in the fifth attempt and then threw 89.49 meters in the last attempt. This is slightly better than his 89.45 meter throw in the Paris Olympics. After the fifth attempt, only the top-3 players could throw the javelin. Neeraj said, ‘(Anderson) Peters threw 90 meters. My body was not feeling good. But there was a full feeling of fighting from within. I really liked my comeback. I did not think much in the last throw, just gave my best.’
He said, ‘I thought I would do well in the first attempt. But this throw was not right. Julius Yego told me ‘be patient’, you will throw the javelin far. I was trying to stay calm.’

Kenya’s 35-year-old Yego finished sixth with an effort of 83 meters. Neeraj said that the day of competition was a bit strange for him because initially he felt that he would not be able to give a better result. He said, ‘Initially I did not think that I would throw very far. But in the end it was good.’ When asked how many more competitions he would do this season, the Indian said, ‘Maybe I will participate in two or one competition and then this season will be over for me. It would not be right to say anything right now, but maybe I will play my last tournament of this year in Brussels (Diamond League finale).’
Third overall:
Neeraj got seven points for finishing second on Thursday. He is joint third with Weber in the Diamond League table with 15 points. Peters reached the top spot with 21 points. Czech Republic’s Yakub Vadlekh finished seventh (82.03 meters) here. He is second overall with 16 points. This season’s Diamond League final will be held in Brussels on September 14. To qualify for the final, Neeraj will have to be in the overall top-6. Neeraj, who is suffering from a long-standing thigh injury, said, ‘The first goal is to go to the doctor and heal the thigh injury 100 percent. Along with this, I will try to improve technically so that I can throw the javelin further.’
