In a recent development, the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) announced late Wednesday that negotiations with the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) have been suspended. SAG-AFTRA represents approximately 160,000 actors.

The AMPTP stated in a formal statement, “After meaningful conversations, it is clear that the gap between the AMPTP and SAG-AFTRA is too great, and conversations are no longer moving us in a productive direction.”

The suspension of negotiations came after the actors’ union presented its latest proposal to the AMPTP, as mentioned in the statement. The AMPTP further highlighted the lack of progress, stating that SAG-AFTRA’s proposal included a “viewership bonus” that would cost over $800 million per year, which would create an “untenable economic burden.” Additionally, the AMPTP claimed that there were only minimal advancements made on the remaining open items.

CNN reached out to SAG-AFTRA for a comment on the matter.

During this round of negotiations, the AMPTP disclosed that they had made a list of offers that included a “first-of-its-kind success-based residual for High-Budget SVOD productions” and several protections related to artificial intelligence (AI).

It is worth noting that SVOD refers to subscription video on demand, which encompasses streaming services such as Netflix and Amazon Prime Video.

The strike by SAG-AFTRA began on July 14, a little over two months after the writers’ strike commenced. However, the writers’ strike concluded in late September, with the Writers Guild of America ratifying a new contract with Hollywood and television studios on October 9.

The future of negotiations between the AMPTP and SAG-AFTRA remains uncertain. The suspension comes as a setback to both parties and raises concerns about the potential impact on the entertainment industry.

Only time will tell if the AMPTP and SAG-AFTRA can overcome their differences and reach a mutually beneficial agreement that satisfies both parties involved.
