“Russia must not win, Ukraine must survive,” said Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz in his government statement in the Bundestag last week. But what exactly the SPD politician means by that, he left open.

After all, Ukraine would also “exist” if Russia keeps occupied Crimea or Donbass. The “defeat” of Russia seems to have been defined just as little in the Chancellery as the “victory” of Ukraine, which Scholz spoke of several times.

Even the leading Western power, the USA, leaves the public in the dark about what goals they are pursuing with their commitment to Ukraine. This is the conclusion of the New York Times (NYT).

A well-regarded editorial in the newspaper, which is regarded worldwide as the level-headed voice of liberalism, recently ruled that it was unclear whether the US government was seeking an end to the war through an agreement or whether it was banking on President Vladimir Putin’s ouster.
