Tina Theune and Silvia Neid lead the DFB women as coaches to the only World Cup titles so far. Before the tournament in Australia and New Zealand, the duo rates the German team as very strong.

Frankfurt/Main.

The former world champion coaches Silvia Neid and Tina Theune count the German footballers among the top favorites at the World Cup. “I trust our team very, very much because the players have a lot of quality,” said the 59-year-old envy of the German Press Agency.

“To become world champions – of course! The team showed last year what they are capable of. They carried the whole of Germany away,” said Theune (69) about the chances of the German team coached by national coach Martina Voss-Tecklenburg.

Envy: Germany is “one of the World Cup favorites”

Neid was assistant coach at Theune in 2003 in the USA when the DFB women won their first World Cup and head coached in China in 2007 when they won their second victory. In 2009 and 2013 she also won the European title and in 2016 Olympic gold with the German team.

Neid pointed out that she had already believed that the selection could win the title at the European Championship last year. The DFB women only lost to hosts England in the final. “Now young players have gained experience, thank God the older ones are there and not injured. For me, Germany is clearly one of the favorites for the World Cup,” she said.

Special praise for Alexandra Popp

For Theune, the German team has “a lot of guys who want to and can lead the way – including, of course, Alexandra Popp. A great captain. The bench is also very well occupied.”

Although Neid is responsible for international trend scouting in the female division in the Scouting, Game Analysis and Diagnostics department of the German Football Association, he will not fly to the World Cup in Australia and New Zealand (July 20 to August), where Germany will play against Morocco, Colombia and South Korea in the preliminary round. “For budget reasons, I’m not at the tournament this time and am trying to do everything on my laptop,” said the 111-time international.
