neighborhood in lockdown and mass testing

The authorities of Guangzhou, an industrial city of 15 million inhabitants in southern China, have closed the central district of Liwan following an increase in coronavirus cases, with 20 infections diagnosed in the last week.

The numbers, albeit limited, have alarmed the city authorities who have ordered the lockdown and mass tests on all the inhabitants of Liwan to limit the outbreak. The newspaper ‘Global Times’ talks about the spread of infections “fast and strong”.

In the district, open-air markets, nursery schools and entertainment venues were closed, eating in indoor restaurants was prohibited and face-to-face teaching was suspended. Restrictions, albeit less stringent, have also been imposed on the inhabitants of four neighboring neighborhoods.
