The Médano El PINar megaproject is not welcomed by residents of El Pinar.

A multimillion-dollar real estate project has just put the residents of El Pinar in a state of struggle, since the architect’s studio Rafael Viñoly plans to erect about 120 luxury housing units for buyers with high purchasing power, which would undermine the nature and peace which the more than 7,000 permanent residents enjoy.

“The proposal to build a 120-unit building on El Pinar beach threatens the natural landscape and community well-being. This project, if carried out, will drastically change the coastal profile that we value so much. Additionally, it could have negative impacts on our local environment and our quality of life”says the signature collection campaign that is available at Change.org.

“According to data from the National Institute of Statistics (INE), El Pinar is a residential area with an approximate population of 7,000 inhabitants who value its tranquility and natural beauty”, adds the campaign.

“We ask the competent authorities to reconsider this project and protect our beloved El Pinar beach. Please, sign this petition to show their support for our cause,” continues the collection of signatures that aims to reach 2,500 and is already above the 1,500 achieved.

Rafael Viñoly’s “Médano El Pinar” project puts neighbors on alert

On the project’s official website, Viñoly announces Médano El Pinar as the development that will “complete its architectural legacy” and says that its greatest interest “has been to make significant civic and cultural contributions, while exceeding programmatic, economic, aesthetics and performance of each construction project.”

This last speech contradicts the position of the residents of El Pinar, who are not at all happy with the arrival of this concrete giant, much to the regret of the memory of Viñoly, who died last March at the age of 79. .

The project will be four stories high and will cost about US$100 million in investment. It would be located at the intersection of the Tomás Berreta and Río Negro boulevards. “You can go straight to the beach, barefoot, and feel like you’re sleeping next to the waves,” Viñoly noted.

All units are intended for buyers with enough money to pay up to US$6,000 per square meter, much more expensive than in other surrounding areas.
