Lava has stopped flowing through the crack opened on Monday in the southwestern part of Iceland, although local authorities have warned that it is “premature” to end the eruption, given the possibility that the flow remains within of closed channels and is not coming to the surface for now.

The Icelandic meteorological office has confirmed in a statement that the eruptive activity “is no longer visible”, after several teams have flown over the area of the crack, almost four kilometers long. These scans have made it possible to confirm that there are still embers in the upper area of the lava, despite the general decrease in activity since Wednesday night.

The authorities therefore keep the area closed, which keeps thousands of people evicted. The residents of the town of Grindavík, evacuated on November 20 after the first alerts about an imminent eruption, have received permits to temporarily return to the area this Thursday.
