Nelly Furtado Pauses Live performances, Embraces Songwriting Future
A resurgence in popularity and a desire to explore new creative avenues have led Nelly Furtado to step away from live shows, the “Say It Right” singer announced Thursday. The artist shared the decision alongside a reflection on the 25th anniversary of her debut album, Whoa, Nelly!
The artist revealed her intention to pause performances for the “foreseeable future” in an emotional post, emphasizing a renewed focus on songwriting. “I have decided to step away from performance for the foreseeable future and pursue some other creative and personal endeavors that I feel would better suit this next phase of my life,” she wrote. Despite the shift, Furtado expressed deep gratitude for her career and affirmed her lifelong passion for music creation. “I have enjoyed my career immensely, and I still love writing music as I have always seen it as a hobby I was lucky enough to make into a career. I’ll identify as a songwriter forever.”
Furtado’s proclamation coincided with a nostalgic look back at the launch of Whoa, Nelly! She shared a photograph of herself at age 20, preparing for performances, recalling shopping for a “pink dress and some sparkly platform shoes.” This reflection was interwoven with her joy at witnessing a new generation discover her music.
The artist highlighted the unexpected reach of her earlier work. “My music has reached a whole new generation of fans and I couldn’t be happier about that,” she stated. furtado recalled hoping in 2000 that someone might rediscover her Whoa, Nelly! vinyl years later, expressing surprise at the myriad ways “old” music is now being enjoyed in 2025.”To have so many people rediscovering my music has been surreal and joyful.
