Nursultan Nazarbayev’s nephew Kairat Satybaldyuly was detained by employees of the Anti-Corruption Service of Kazakhstan, TASS reports citing the agency’s press service.

“The Anti-Corruption Service is investigating a criminal case on the facts of abuse of official powers and embezzlement of funds of Kazakhtelecom JSC on an especially large scale. On suspicion of committing these crimes, Kairat Satybaldyuly was detained and placed in a temporary detention center,” the message says.

The Anti-Corruption Service is also checking Satybaldyuly’s involvement in other crimes that undermine the security of the state, the department said.

Sputnik also claims that Satybaldyuly is Nazarbayev’s nephew.

Nazarbayev served as president of Kazakhstan for almost 30 years and stepped down in 2019. In November 2021, he also stepped down as chairman of the ruling Nur Otan party. Against the backdrop of mass unrest in Kazakhstan in January 2022, Nazarbayev handed over the post of head of the Security Council to the President of Kazakhstan, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev.

In February, the lower house of the republic’s parliament approved an amendment by the Senate, which proposes to cancel the coordination of initiatives in domestic and foreign policy with the country’s first president.
