Russian grandmaster Yan Nepomniachtchi lost to 17-year-old Nodirbek Abdusattorov from Uzbekistan in the tie-break of the World Rapid Chess Championship. This was reported on December 28 by the Sport-Express newspaper.

After the 13th round of the competition, four chess players – Nodirbek Abdusattorov, Jan Nepomniachtchi, Magnus Carlsen, Fabiano Caruana – scored 9.5 points each. The best additional indicators from Nepomniachtchi and Abdusattorov made it possible to fight for the title of the world rapid champion.

In a tie-break with two games (with time control 3 minutes + 2 seconds per move), the first match ended in a draw, the second brought victory to Abdusattorov, who became the youngest world champion in rapid chess in the history of chess.

In the junior ranking of the International Chess Federation (FIDE) Abdusattorov takes third place. Nepomniachtchi is fifth in the FIDE rating.

Earlier that day, Nepomniachtchi beat the Polish athlete Jan-Krzysztof Dudu and the American Timur Gareev. His duel with Baadur Jobava from Georgia and Boris Gelfand from Israel ended with an equal score.

On December 24, Nepomniachtchi won a friendly chess match with businessman Vladimir Potanin. The game was played with a time control of 30 minutes for each player without adding, it ended on the 38th move.

The World Rapid Championship was held from 26 to 28 December in Warsaw. The world blitz championship will also be held there from 29 to 30 December. Among Russians, Sergey Karjakin in 2012 and Daniil Dubov in 2018 became world rapid champions.
