Colombia’s national team coach, Néstor Lorenzo, has explained the decision to exclude forward Jhon Durán from the upcoming friendly matches against New Zealand and Australia, citing a lack of consistent playing time and recent fitness issues.
The omission of Durán, who plays for Fenerbahçe, has sparked debate among fans and analysts. The forward’s last international camp was marred by both controversies and injuries, ultimately leading to an early departure. While he has begun to regain form, scoring a goal in recent minutes, it wasn’t enough to secure a spot in Lorenzo’s squad for the November 15th match against New Zealand.
Assessing Durán’s Current Form
Lorenzo addressed the situation directly in a recent press conference, emphasizing that all players – both those selected and those left out – are continuously monitored. “The thing about Jhon Jader is that, like all the players who are called up or blocked, they are being followed, week by week and game by game,” he stated.
The coach acknowledged Durán’s recent goal but highlighted the limited playing time. “He has played very little, if he came on he scored a goal, but he played 15 or 20 minutes, a while,” Lorenzo explained. “He has not had the continuity he needs to compete again in the National Team, we brought the boys who are competing more and he is always among those called up.”
Lorenzo’s Perspective on Durán’s Absence
Lorenzo was candid about Durán’s current condition, stating that the player “is not at his best today.” He attributed this to a combination of “club changes and injuries,” but remained optimistic about the forward’s future potential. “He is a player who has a future,” Lorenzo affirmed.
The coach’s decision underscores the importance he places on current form and consistent match play when selecting the national team. While Durán remains on the radar, he will need to demonstrate sustained performance for Fenerbahçe to regain his place in the squad.
Colombia will face New Zealand this Saturday, November 15th, at 7:30 pm local time. Meanwhile, Durán continues his training and rehabilitation in Türkiye, aiming to return to peak condition and compete for a spot in future national team call-ups.
