The US hopes for solutions to the carbon tax issue at COP29.
This was stated by the senior adviser to the US President on international climate policy John Podestaanswering Trend’s question during a briefing in Baku, Day.Az reports.
“The United States, much of Europe, Japan, perhaps most of the world, have set 2050 as a goal to achieve net-zero emissions. China has set 2060 as a goal. But policies to achieve these emissions reductions will differ depending on national circumstances .
In terms of carbon pricing, some countries have adopted this as a basis for reducing their emissions,” he said.
Podesta noted that the United States has some carbon pricing.
“In particular, we have just introduced a regime where we charge for excess methane emissions from our oil and gas sector. In Europe, carbon pricing is more of a pillar of their emissions reduction strategy.
There is a separate issue related to carbon markets. And that’s really at the center of the negotiations here. This is the so-called Article 6 issue, which is central to the negotiations on carbon markets.
And as I noted, I think we came out of this preliminary agreement with the feeling that we can finally solve these problems. We have made significant progress on one of the two main issues on the table. And I think we have also made good progress on another issue,” he added.
