Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will hold a security cabinet meeting this evening (Thursday) to discuss Hamas’ proposals regarding a possible ceasefire agreement in Gaza, according to a media source.
The source added that Netanyahu will hold consultations with his team for ceasefire negotiations before the meeting.
A private source revealed later today that Hamas had submitted its amendments to the last Israeli paper “without affecting the essential issues,” according to what the German News Agency reported.
The source said, in a statement to the Lebanese Al-Mayadeen channel, which was reported on its website today, that Hamas maintained its positions on establishing a permanent ceasefire, the complete withdrawal of Israeli forces from the Strip, and the return of the displaced to their homes. The movement also insisted, according to the source, on “the necessity of withdrawing from the Philadelphi Corridor (located along the border between the Gaza Strip and Egypt, 14 km long and 100 meters wide), and the Rafah crossing in the southern Gaza Strip.” The source indicated that Hamas insisted on its position of rejecting a “veto” on the release of those serving life sentences. He also noted that the movement “showed flexibility in dealing with clauses 8 and 14, in a way that ensures the continuation of negotiations until a permanent ceasefire is reached in the Gaza Strip.”
Hamas announced yesterday (Wednesday) that the head of its political bureau, Ismail Haniyeh, had made contacts in the last few hours with mediators in Qatar and Egypt regarding the ideas that the movement is discussing with them, with the aim of reaching an agreement that would put an end to the ongoing Israeli aggression on the Gaza Strip, stressing that it dealt positively with the content of the ongoing deliberations.
