Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office said he was “in good condition and fully conscious after undergoing a ‘successful’ prostate operation.”
The office added in a statement on Sunday: “The Prime Minister has now been transferred to a protected underground intensive care unit. He is expected to remain in the hospital to monitor his condition in the next few days.”
For its part, Hadassah Medical Center said: “The Prime Minister has recovered from anesthesia and is in good condition. He was transferred to the recovery unit, and will remain under observation in the coming days.”
Netanyahu’s office announced on Saturday that he had been diagnosed with a urinary tract infection caused by a benign enlargement of the prostate.
Last March, the Israeli Prime Minister underwent surgery for a hernia, and in July last year, doctors implanted him with a pacemaker after medical concerns.
Prime Minister Netanyahu posted a video clip before heading for surgery. Netanyahu appeared walking before undergoing urinary tract surgery at Hadassah Hospital using the HoLEP technique, which relies on laser removal of the prostate without an abdominal incision.
In turn, Israeli media reported that Justice Minister Yariv Levin will temporarily assume the position of acting Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who is currently recovering after undergoing surgery to remove the prostate.
Defense Minister Yisrael Katz is also authorized to hold a security cabinet meeting “if necessary,” in Netanyahu’s absence, according to the Times of Israel newspaper.
Netanyahu is expected to spend several days under observation, in a fortified underground recovery ward.
