The Israeli team negotiating the release of hostages held by Hamas and a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip is concerned that conditions recently added by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu could trigger a crisis.
As reported by Day.Az with reference to Interfax, sources informed The Times of Israel about this.
“He (Netanyahu – editor’s note) thinks that if he toughens his position on Hamas, he will break it, but in doing so he is making a dangerous bet on the lives of the hostages,” the publication quotes the opinion of sources, who add that “there is no more time.”
The newspaper’s sources noted that “Netanyahu is determined, but his position does not allow for negotiations to begin.” “It is unclear whether he wants a deal,” they said.
At the same time, The Times of Israel writes, Netanyahu said in Florida on Friday that he was sending a negotiating team to Rome. Earlier that day, it was reported that CIA Director William Burns was to meet in the Italian capital with the heads of Israeli and Egyptian intelligence David Barnea and Abbas Kamel and Qatari Prime Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani to negotiate a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and the release of hostages.
According to Axios, the meeting will focus on a strategy for moving forward rather than addressing the remaining gaps in the agreement currently under consideration.
