Netflix is part of the core business of video streaming. This business is set to expand into video games – and is gradually taking shape.

Los Gatos (dpa) – Netflix’s plans to enter the video game business are taking shape with the purchase of a development studio.

The video streaming giant swallows the company Night School Studio, founded in 2014, which is best known for its debut game “Oxenfree”, as the companies announced on Tuesday. A purchase price was not mentioned.

Netflix sees video games as a promising area for expansion beyond its core video streaming business. In the summer, the company hired industry veteran Mike Verdu, who had previously worked for the large games company Electronic Arts, among other things, to manage the division.

At the same time, Netflix co-boss Ted Sarandos left open at a conference appearance on Monday when the company’s range of games should start. The company said it was still at an early stage when it announced the purchase of the night school.

In the Netflix universe there are productions such as “Stranger Things” that are well suited for implementation as video games. Since June, the service has also been trying to get additional revenue through an online shop for fan articles.
