Netherlands: former glory Marc Overmars suspended for one year by the federation for “inappropriate behavior”

This Thursday, Marc Overmars was banned from carrying out any activity related to Dutch football for two years, one of which was suspended. In February 2022, the former glory of Dutch football resigned from his post as sporting director of Ajax Amsterdam after admitting to being the source of sexual harassment towards certain employees of the club. Overmars had notably admitted to having sent a “series of inappropriate messages” containing photos and videos of a sexual nature, and reported a certain “shame” regarding his actions. A scandal which nevertheless did not prevent him from finding another position a month later, that of technical director of the Belgian club Royal Antwerp.

“In examining the appropriate sanction, the disciplinary committee took into account the fact that the case was highly publicized and was detrimental to the accused,” specifies the Dutch Sports Court in a press release. He added that Overmars’ “inappropriate behavior” had been going on for a long time and that several cases had been identified within the capital club. The former midfielder served as sporting director of Ajax from 2012 to 2022, taking part in Ajax’s recent successes, notably during their epic Champions League run in 2019 and their Europa League final in 2017.

This sanction only applies to organizations affiliated with the Dutch Football Federation, the former Arsenal and Barcelona player will be able to continue to exercise his functions in Antwerp, Belgium.
