She understands that people are angry if they think the federal government is doing too little to protect the climate. “And I find it very worrying that people, young and old alike, are so desperate that they have no choice but to glue themselves to the streets.”

There are “moments when disruptive disobedience can be totally effective,” she said. “But so far we have no reason to assume that it is categorically more effective,” she added. “And we have to keep in mind that certain actions can, in the worst case, also deter people and policy-makers.”

Neubauer also sharply criticized the disputes in the traffic light coalition about climate protection. “Instead of going into catch-up mode, you initiated children’s theater,” she said. Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) accused her of inactivity. There is also a risk that people’s trust will be lost.
