the terracotta, also known as ‘terra cotta’, has been used for centuries to create a wide range of objects, from pots to works of art and sculptures. However, in modern times, this versatile ceramic has been used in an innovative way to develop a designer air conditioning system that is not only environmental friendly, but also highly efficient and aesthetically attractive.

Terracotta is a naturally porous material, which allows it to absorb and retain water. This property has been used for centuries in the manufacture of clay pots, where the moisture is kept close to the roots of the plants. Now, this feature has been ingeniously exploited in the design of an environmentally friendly air conditioning system that does not use electricity.

The concept behind the terracotta air conditioner

The French studio Entreautre, responsible for this innovation, has devised a system in which a certain amount of water circulates inside a terracotta structure in the shape of a labyrinth. Meanwhile, a flow of air passes through the wet wall, causing the evaporation of the water and generating a cooling effect.

The design team has also suggested the possibility of using fans to intensify the cooling effect of the air. This combination of the porous structure of the terracotta and the flow of air creates a biomimetic air conditioner, inspired by the tree structure of coral and with an interior design reminiscent of these fascinating marine organisms.

To carry out this revolutionary project, the French design studio acquired a exclusive ceramic 3D printer, designed by Olivier Van Herpt. This innovative machine makes it possible to print complex objects in terracotta, making the most of the surface of the damp wall in contact with the ventilated air.

A standout feature of this 3D printer is its open design, which allows the user to access the part at all times during the printing process. This provides the ability to work closely with the material, like a craftsman, taking advantage of the precision of the digital tool and obtaining high-quality results.
