New Appointments in Israeli Police Announced

Tomorrow, eight superintendent positions will be awarded at a ceremony held by the Minister of National Security, Itamar Ben Gabir, and the Police Commissioner, Rabbi Superintendent Kobi Shabtai. These appointments are part of the recent round of appointments determined by the Minister and the Commissioner last week.

Among the appointments, Superintendent Ami Ashad, who currently serves as the commander of the Tel Aviv district, will be transferred to the position of head of the training division in the police. This move is considered a demotion as the commander of the Tel Aviv district is regarded as a senior superintendent position, whereas the head of the training division is typically accepted as a first superintendent position. Superintendent Ashad has announced that he will not be attending the ceremony.

In addition to these new appointments, Minister Ben Gabir and Commissioner Shabtai reached an agreement on other appointments within the police force. Superintendent Peretz Amr will become the commander of the Tel Aviv District, Sub-Superintendent Daniel Levy will take on the role of Commander of the Coastal District, and Superintendent Yoram Sofer will be appointed as the project coordinator for the fight against crime in the Arab sector.

It is important to note that Commissioner Shabtai recently confirmed that he will leave his position in January 2024, as previously stated. A joint announcement by Minister Ben Gabir and Commissioner Shabtai outlined the agreement on the Commissioner’s departure date and simultaneous approval of the top-level appointments within the police force.

“The commissioner informed the minister that he will end his term on January 17, 2024, as planned,” the joint statement reads. “It was also agreed that the minister and the commissioner will continue to work together until the end of the commissioner’s term, and will continue to work to strengthen the Israel Police, and for the benefit of the citizens of the country.” Alongside the announcement of the Commissioner’s departure, the joint statement also mentioned the upcoming round of senior appointments in the Israel Police.

The ceremony tomorrow will mark an important step in the development of the Israeli Police force and the implementation of strategic leadership changes. The new appointments, as well as the impending departure of Commissioner Shabtai, will shape the future direction of Israel’s law enforcement agency.
