Iranian government spokeswoman Fatemeh Mohajerani announced that “Arash Zareh Lahoni” has been appointed as governor of Kurdistan province. He is a figure from the Sunni minority, succeeding the current governor of Kurdistan, Ismail Zarei Kosha..

According to Mehr News Agency, Mohajerani said: “Yadollah Rahmani, who has held several positions in the country, has also been appointed as governor of Kohgiluyeh and Boyer-Ahmad province.”

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian promised during his election campaign to use the Sunni and Kurdish minorities in government positions.

Lahouni is the third Sunni official to be appointed in the Pezeshkian government. He holds a PhD in international economics, was a member of parliament in the eleventh session, and held the position of executive director of the Red Crescent Authority in Kurdistan Province.

On September 8, Hossein Simiai Sarraf, the Iranian Minister of Higher Education, appointed Mohammad Nabi Shahiki Tash as Deputy Minister of Higher Education for Technology and Innovation, making him the first Sunni Baluch to be appointed as an assistant minister.

On August 28, the Iranian president chose Abdul Rahim Hosseinzadeh, one of the Kurdish and Sunni representatives in parliament, to be the vice president for rural development and deprived areas in the country.

Sunnis in Iran are the second largest religious sect after Shiites, and the largest religious minority in Iran. Sunnis constitute between 8-10% of Iran’s population, while reports from Sunni research centers indicate that they represent 20% of the total Iranian population, which is approximately 90 million people. Most Sunnis are concentrated in the Sistan and Baluchestan province in southeastern Iran, and the Kurdistan province in western Iran, adjacent to the Iraqi border.
