BMW has just brought out its new power SUV XM, and the Bavarians have come up with an even more powerful sports variant. However, the designation XM Red Label should surprise customers. Not just because the XM RL is the most powerful production BMW of all time and has a dune mode.

It’s not as if BMW or the still sporty M GmbH in the north of the Bavarian state capital don’t have enough designations to express an even sharper sports version to impress customers. For other sports models such as the M3, M5 or M8, there were name suffixes such as CS, Performance or Competition. With the new BMW XM, an alcoholic evening drink apparently had to serve as the name patron, because the new top model of the power SUV from Spartanburg / South Carolina with the annex “Red Label” looks like a fine whiskey that finds its well-heeled buyers at the bar.

The exclusive top model will be officially presented for the first time at Auto China in the middle of next week in Shanghai. Visually sharpened again to make the mighty all-wheel drive car even more powerful and polarizing than it already is, there is a red frame for the huge double kidney grille and other red design details on the luxury model, which costs at least 203,000 euros and will be available to customers from September. In addition to the slightly sharpened look, the spoiled SUV customer gets a significant increase in performance from the double-charged 4.4-liter V8 with electric support to 550 kW / 748 hp and a maximum torque of an enormous 1,000 Nm; that’s 95 hp and 200 Nm more than the standard XM, which is anything but weak. The all-wheel-drive colossus, which weighs more than 2.5 tons, accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in 3.8 seconds and, on special request, can only be locked electronically at 290 km/h.

The standard consumption: 1.6 liters per 100 kilometers with a fully charged 25.7 kW battery pack or 33 kWh. Purely electrically, up to 80 kilometers are possible. The battery pack in the underbody is recharged in just over four hours thanks to a charging capacity of 7.4 kW. The power of the two engines is banished to the road by all-wheel drive. As with the BMW M3/M4 and M5, the system is designed with rear-wheel emphasis. There is a special dune mode especially for customers in the United Arab Emirates or other sandbox fans, while the occupants lounge in fine leather seats and look at the razor-sharp displays. What more can you enjoy than a Red Label?
