(ANSA) – SINGAPORE, 04 SEPTEMBER – A team of researchers in Singapore has identified a new strain of the fungus Candida auris (C. auris), a highly resistant and transmissible pathogen usually associated with hospital environments. This new variant, the sixth globally, was discovered in a patient with no recent travel history, suggesting possible local spread.
Candida auris poses a serious threat to public health, especially to immunocompromised patients. Its ability to resist antifungal treatments and spread rapidly in hospital settings makes it of particular concern.
The discovery of this new strain highlights the importance of continuous surveillance and effective containment strategies. Researchers are developing artificial intelligence tools to identify new strains early and monitor the evolution of this pathogen.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has officially classified Candida auris as one of the most serious threats to global public health this year.
