Former mayor Cynthia Viteri and the municipal administration of Aquiles Alvarez are starring in a new conflict on social networks. This time the subject in dispute is the care of pets in the Municipal Directorate of Animal Welfare.

Last Sunday, September 3, 2023, Viteri reposted a publication from the ‘Alcaldía de la Gente’ account on X (formerly Twitter). In the thread it is mentioned that the Animal Welfare Center stacks dog carcasses in red bags.

“The negligence in the management of canine distender (distemper) caused many to become infected and die,” the complaint says.

With photographs, it was shown that the pets allegedly live in cages and with dirt. “They are tied up all the time, with signs of neglect, eating next to their waste,” says the ‘Alcaldía de la Gente’ account.

These messages were reposted by Cynthia Viteri, who later wrote: “In 100 days they ended 4 years of humanitarian care, not only for people, but also for animals that served people. This is not just incompetence, it is cruelty.”

For its part, the Municipality of Guayaquil rejected the assertions and described the messages as malicious and unfounded.

“It is unfortunate that political people, through lies, try to destabilize the good work done by the Animal Welfare Directorate of the Municipality of Guayaquil,” reads a statement.

The administration of Aquiles Álvarez also asked Cynthia Viteri to present the corresponding evidence, and at the same time, asked the State Attorney General’s Office to initiate a preliminary investigation to determine responsibilities for the “false news” published by the former official.

The last months, the discrepancies between Viteri and Álvarez have been a constant. In June, for example, the mayor of the Main Port affirmed that the city “is turned upside down” with paralyzed works, while the former mayor pointed out that the projects that the correísmo militant covers are from his administration.

Álvarez has just completed 100 days in command of Guayaquil, time in which 12 ordinances have been approved, among which he highlighted the one that corresponds to the reduction of fines from the Municipal Transit Authority (ATM) and the vehicle inspection for taxis and buses urban once a year.
