Hamm – Germany is experiencing a surge in COVID-19 infections as a result of the new Corona variant known as “Pirola”. This mutated strain of the virus has been found to exhibit previously unknown symptoms, raising concerns among health authorities.

“Pirola” or BA.2.86, was first identified in Israel and has since spread rapidly throughout Europe, reaching Germany as well. While it appears to be less contagious than previous variants, concrete research results are yet to be confirmed. Similarly, a severe course of the disease does not seem to occur more frequently compared to older Corona types.

However, what sets “Pirola” apart are the unique symptoms it presents. According to reports from wa.de, the virus is known to cause the following symptoms commonly associated with COVID-19: headache, fatigue, sore throat, hoarseness, and sneezing. But there are also a number of unusual symptoms that have not been observed before, which include rash, diarrhea, changes in the mouth and tongue such as swelling or ulcers, itchy red eyes, and red and sore fingers or toes.

To ensure protection against severe cases, vaccination against “Pirola” could be crucial. Biontech, a pharmaceutical company, has already adapted its vaccine to tackle new variants of the virus. However, whether the current vaccine covers the “Pirola” variant remains uncertain.

The Standing Vaccination Commission (Stiko) recommends vaccination for individuals over the age of 60 and those belonging to high-risk groups. Seniors and people with pre-existing conditions are advised to exercise caution. Notably, simultaneous vaccination against both COVID-19 and the flu is now possible. However, if a live flu vaccine is administered, there should be a 14-day interval between the two injections or nasal spray doses.

Additionally, individuals who fall ill are advised to take note of the electronic sick leave arrangements that have been implemented since the beginning of the year. New rules for reporting sickness have been put in place.

As the German population grapples with the arrival of the “Pirola” variant, it is essential for individuals to remain vigilant, take precautionary measures, and, if eligible, get vaccinated to protect themselves and others from the potential risks associated with this new strain of COVID-19.]
