The new Corona variant “Pirola” has arrived in Germany, causing an increase in infection rates and presenting previously unknown symptoms. With the winter season underway, the country is grappling with the onset of the next wave of illness.

Often manifesting with different symptoms than the previous strains, the emergence of the “Pirola” variant, also known as BA.2.86, was first observed in Israel and has since rapidly spread to Europe, reaching Germany.

While it appears that the “Pirola” variant is less contagious than its predecessors, there is a lack of confirmed research results on this aspect. Reports suggest that a severe course of the disease does not occur more frequently than with older Corona types.

However, there are distinct new symptoms associated with the “Pirola” variant, as reported by wa.de. Apart from the commonly observed signs of corona disease such as headache, fatigue, sore throat, hoarseness, and sneezing, there are additional unusual symptoms that have not been seen before. These include a rash, diarrhea, changes in the mouth and tongue (swelling or ulcers), itchy red eyes, and red and sore fingers or toes.

In response to the emergence of this new variant, Biontech has already adapted its vaccine to target the new variants, although it remains uncertain whether “Pirola” is already covered. The Standing Vaccination Commission (Stiko) recommends vaccination for individuals over the age of 60 and those belonging to high-risk groups. Seniors and people with pre-existing medical conditions are urged to exercise caution when it comes to potential exposure.

In positive news, simultaneous vaccination against both flu and coronavirus has become possible. However, if the flu vaccination involves a live vaccine, a 14-day gap must be maintained between the two injections or nasal spray doses.

An important reminder for those who fall ill is that sick leave certificates (AU) are now arranged electronically, with new rules in place for reporting sickness since the beginning of this year.

As the “Pirola” variant spreads across Germany, health authorities and medical professionals continue to monitor its impact and study its behavior to devise appropriate measures to curb its transmission and provide effective treatment. Vigilance and adherence to preventive measures remain crucial in combating the ongoing pandemic.]
