Al-Masry Al-Youm newspaper revealed a new corruption case in the Egyptian Ministry of Supply, in which an official holding the position of Undersecretary in one of the governorates of Upper Egypt is being investigated.

The local newspaper quoted sources in the Ministry of Supply, which it did not name, that “the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Supply gave verbal instructions to others to disburse quantities of roughage to merchants, without any papers supporting the disbursement, according to what was stated in the testimony of the defendants.”

She added, “The defendants disbursed these quantities during the months of January and February 2023, from the Middle Egypt Flour Mills Company, to profit from them on the black market.”

The newspaper added, “The Undersecretary of the Ministry of Supply and others were charged for giving them instructions to disburse quantities of bran without documents supporting the disbursement to the names of people who were not entitled to disburse those quantities, and to sell them on the black market for their own personal account.”

According to Al-Masry Al-Youm, “the total value of the profit that merchants obtained from illegally receiving the disbursement of raw materials stock exceeded 2,226 million pounds ($46,000).”

During the past few months, local media reported on corruption issues linked to the Egyptian Ministry of Finance, as they revealed last December that the Administrative Control Authority had investigated a corruption network in the ministry, and that an advisor to the minister, responsible for follow-up, oversight and distribution, had been arrested.

Later this year, the military court issued rulings to punish officials in the Ministry of Supply and government and private companies who contributed to “withholding sugar” from the markets to raise prices and profit, according to what the government newspaper Al-Ahram published in early April.
