The other electric SUVs from the Volkswagen Group were all allowed to present themselves. Now the waiting time for Cupra fans is over, because they can at least take a look at the new Tavascan. The first electric crossover from Cupra will be delivered from the beginning of next year.
Excitement is high in Martorell as the Tavascan is set to play a key role in Cupra’s future. Julio Lozano, Head of Exterior Design, highlights the freedom he and his team had when designing the Tavascan: “This is a brand without a history and that allows us to be very creative and bold.” Lozano knows perfectly well , which are the highlights of the 4.64 meter long electric crossover, which is closely related to the Audi Q4 Etron, Skoda Enyaq or VW ID4: “The superhero mask in front, the coupe-like profile, the rising waistline and the luminous triangle signature.”
In the interior there is a continuation of such sporty design elements as the transverse copper strip on the dashboard and the chrome-plated bridge in the shape of a delta wing. “In the interior, we tried to present the construction in an organic way and reinforce the use of light materials,” explains Alberto Torresillas, chief designer of the Tavascan, named after a village in northern Catalonia. The ambient lighting adapts to the wishes of the driver or individual driving programs. Both the materials and the workmanship appear more valuable than in some of the volume competitors. Behind the steering wheel, the driver looks at a small 5.3-inch instrument panel, above which a sensible head-up display is mounted in the better equipped versions. Larger and well positioned is the central 15-inch screen for navigation, operating functions and the sound system, as well as the illuminated climate control functions.
The standard sports seats with their solid structure provide good lateral support, while the integrated headrests underscore the dynamic character. In addition to fabric and microfiber, they can also be covered with imitation leather and fine leather on request. Thanks to a wheelbase of 2.76 meters, there is enough space in the rear for three adults and the legroom in particular is generous. By folding down the rear seat, the luggage compartment with its volume of 540 liters can be variably expanded.
Initially, the Cupra Tavascan, which will be available from early 2024, will be available as a 210 kW / 286 PS / 545 Nm rear-wheel drive. Above that is the VZ all-wheel drive version with 250 kW / 340 hp, in which up to 30 percent of the drive power can be directed to the front wheels for a more dynamic driving style. In addition to the Traction driving mode, Spanier offers the settings Range, Comfort, Performance, Cupra and Individual. From a standing start, the Cupra Tavascan VZ accelerates to 100 km/h in 5.6 seconds. Despite all its sportiness, it is already limited to 180 km/h. The electric SUV is optionally available with two battery packs in sizes of 58 and 77 kWh, which should ensure a range of up to 550 kilometers. The maximum charging speed is 170 kilowatts.
