New Cycle Path Project Aims to Enhance Safety and Connectivity Between Nový Bor and Česká Lípa

A new 1.3-kilometer section of cycle path is under construction between Nový Bor and Česká Lípa, designed to provide a safer alternative for cyclists traveling the heavily trafficked I/9 road. The project, spearheaded by Metrostav DIZ, represents a significant investment in regional infrastructure and recreational opportunities.

Addressing a Critical Safety Need

The existing I/9 road, which connects Nový Bor and Česká Lípa, sees an estimated 16,000 vehicles daily. This high volume of traffic poses a considerable risk to cyclists, prompting local officials to prioritize the development of dedicated cycling infrastructure. “The project is essential for the safety of cyclists and a better connection of Nový Bor with Česká Lípa,” stated Mayor Jaromír Dvořák. “The cycle path will take cyclists outside the main road and calm transport.”

Construction Details and Funding

The 1.3-kilometer segment will extend from the local swimming pool towards the I/9 road, featuring a key footbridge over the highway at Artifex, ultimately connecting to the bus stop on Chotovice hill. The total cost of this phase is estimated at 25.5 million Czech crowns (without VAT). A significant portion of the funding – 70% – will be provided through subsidies from the State Fund for Transport Infrastructure, reflecting the project’s importance at the national level. The relatively high cost per kilometer is attributed to the construction of the aforementioned footbridge.

Balancing Development with Environmental Concerns

Construction will inevitably impact the surrounding environment, including the green belt and nearby wetland areas. Approximately 200 trees will need to be removed to accommodate the new path. However, developers are committed to minimizing ecological disruption. “In wetlands, however, we choose a gentle solution, the cycle path will lead on wooden beams,” explained Lukáš Michvot from the City Development Department. “As a result, we do not disturb the natural character of the locality and support the combination of recreation with nature.”

The popular “Novoborská Amazonie” area near the swimming pool, created through collaboration between the city and the non-profit organization Čmelák, will remain accessible to both pedestrians and cyclists, continuing to foster its natural and leisure potential.

Expanding the Regional Cycling Network

This new section builds upon previous work completed in 2023, which connected Husova Street to the swimming pool, adding public lighting, a bridge, and rest areas. Recent additions this summer include a 2 million crown workout playground and an 880 thousand crown playground.

Looking ahead, Česká Lípa is actively preparing a follow-up section from Pihel to Stará Lada, while Nový Bor is planning a third stage to link Chotovice hill to the existing route. “In the future, we want to connect the bike path to the regional organ, plunge or green-way routes,” added Mayor Dvořák. “This would create a backbone network for cyclists throughout North Bohemia.”

This ambitious vision underscores the commitment to establishing a comprehensive and interconnected cycling network, promoting both sustainable transportation and outdoor recreation throughout the region.
