Many are criticizing Azmat’s nomination and his leadership, some say it is the conflict within the Awami League. All such questions will surely hurt. What is the definition of leadership, what is meant by representation in democracy, the theoretical debate has also started on Facebook, on talk shows. But the truth is hard.
Mistakes are not made by humans. This is the basic face of electoral democracy. Azmat made a mistake. He thought he got everything by getting the symbol of the ruling party, because the party honored him with the nomination. He forgot that votes are not rewards. Citizens do not vote based on what they will get if they vote. If the question is asked, Azmat fought for the vote by promising to give?
His speech was clear and he basically only sang the slander of the son of the recently departed mayor, Zayeda Khatun, who got the people’s verdict. He had no specific program. He contested on the basis of his seniority, recognition at the national level. It has been proved that in fact he has no influence in Gazipur.
Public opinion organization, like mass movement program implementation, determines the acceptability of the leader and his party, the ability to influence public and private parties. Azmat is not that leader. Zayda Khatun was the candidate right as Jahangir’s nomination was cancelled. It was again understood that Jahangir learned how to fight the battle of elections in a multi-party arena. In the last election where Jahangir was the party’s winning candidate, this time there are many criticisms of him. But this time even in extremely hostile conditions, he explained that there is no question about his success.
The question is, what is the new direction of Gazipur Nirbabchan? This can only be said when the ruling party does not accept its defeat. Awami League general secretary Obaidul Quader said in his initial response that free, fair and impartial elections are possible under the current government, which has been proved by the Gazipur City Corporation elections. He also said that the people were more happy because the election was fair than they would have been if the candidate of Awami League had won in Gazipur City. But it is being said from within the Awami League that he is responsible for this defeat as the general secretary, because the organizational weakness of the party is now revealed.
These are all reactions. There is no benefit of Awami League by giving silly excuses such as conflict, selection of wrong candidates behind this defeat. Awami League will have to pay a bigger price in the future if it does not analyze this defeat in depth and learn from it. However, the big question is how much this group thinks about.
The party has been in power for three consecutive terms. But any sensitive politically aware person will say that during this whole period the Awami League as a party, its organs and affiliated organizations and their leaders did not exercise as much political power as they did. Because they didn’t do it, they are only looking at the party, the symbol, the candidate but not the people.
They do not see human power because they have not seen it. It is one thing to stand independent, but after bringing an old housewife mother from the house, a Jhanu leader like Azmat Ulla Khan, a well-known brand like a boat and defeating a strong party like Awami League in a strong base like Gazipur, the party idiots see this defeat only as Jahangir’s money.
Although Jahangir Alam will take full credit for the Gazipur election, this boat defeat is a big deal. People know that Zayda Khatun has no experience, know that there will be no development if the government leader is not elected. Yet they came in droves to the polling booths and gave victory to an inexperienced woman like Zayda Khatun.
Will the ruling party understand how much people are angry and upset with the government? It is said that women voters did not vote by boat, which is a bigger issue. After all the actions and contributions of the current Prime Minister for women, if one has to listen to this, then one has to question the organizational performance and capacity of the party.
Azmat Ulla Khan is a man of clean image. But he is a philanthropic and reformist people? No one will say that. How to win the hearts of these political voters? Perhaps there are very few candidates in the party who can win the hearts of the voters.
People are really tired of seeing one after another party leaders and their relatives in power all over the country. Corruption, nepotism and government control – these words do not need to be explained to people. Even within the party, people look for people who have no group of their own, no family, no permanent interest circle.

But a review of the Gazipur election results makes this fact clear anew that democracy, despite its many flaws and imperfections, is what the common people speak of or come to speak of through its practice. Here lies the real hope of democratic structures. Again, this is where the responsibility of democratic rulers lies.
