Astronomers Use James Webb Space Telescope to Make Groundbreaking Observations
Los Angeles, December 1, 2023 (Xinhua) – An international team of astronomers has made a groundbreaking discovery using NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope. The team was able to provide the first observations of water and other molecules in the highly radiant interior of a rocky planetary formation disk, in one of the most extreme environments in our galaxy, according to NASA.
The results of this observation suggest that terrestrial planetary formation conditions can occur in a wider range of possible environments than previously thought, which is an important finding for understanding the diversity of different types of exoplanets.
“Webb is the only telescope with the spatial resolution and sensitivity to study planet-forming disks in massive star-forming regions,” said team leader Maria Claudia Ramirez-Taños of the Max Planck Institute for Astronomy in Germany.
The astronomers aim to characterize the physical properties and chemical composition of regions of the rocky planet-forming disks in the Crayfish Nebula using a medium-resolution spectrometer on the James Webb Telescope’s mid-infrared instrument.
