As traffic changes and society evolves, it becomes imperative that traffic regulations keep up with these changes, providing safety and adapting to new road realities. Vehicles with different functionalities and aimed at different segments of the population coexist on the roads, requiring a precise and specific categorization of licenses to drive them.

In a scenario where SUVs are gaining more and more space and popularity on the roads, an unprecedented and audacious proposal emerges in the European context, aiming to create an exclusive license category for drivers of these powerful and imposing vehicles.

Karima Delli, a prominent deputy, is at the forefront of this pioneering initiative, defending the importance of adapting driver training to the particularity and complexity of SUVs, thus ensuring safer traffic and better preparation of drivers to deal with the specificities of these vehicles .

Exclusive driver’s license for SUVs

The proposition in question highlights the environmental impact and safety issues related to SUVs, highlighting their robust dimensions and lower energy efficiency compared to smaller vehicles, such as compact sedans. Due to these characteristics, SUVs contribute more significantly to CO2 emissions.

In terms of road safety, there is a tendency for accidents involving these types of vehicles to result in more serious damage. The parliamentarian highlights that, in situations of being run over, pedestrians are twice as likely to suffer fatalities if the vehicle involved is an SUV. In view of this, she suggests the creation of a new license category, called CNH B+, specifically for commercial vehicles that weigh more than 1,800 kg. To acquire this license, drivers would need to be over 21 years old and have at least two years of experience in category B.

It is important to emphasize that the emphasis in this proposal is on the weight of the vehicle, and not specifically on its model. Therefore, the proposed regulation would only apply to larger SUVs, leaving smaller models out of this new requirement.

Which vehicles can I drive in each CNH category?

If you are planning to obtain your first driver’s license or are thinking about changing the category of your license, but are unsure about which category of driver’s license is required for the type of vehicle you want to drive, Jornal Contábil is here to answer your questions. We will detail the specifications of each of the CNH categories (A, B, C, D and E) available in Brazil.

CNH Categoria A

Category A is restricted to those who wish to drive two or three-wheeled vehicles. This means that, with this license, you are not authorized to drive cars or any other type of four-wheeled vehicle. This category includes motorcycles, scooters, mopeds and tricycles. The Mobylettes, which made their return to the Brazilian market in a new electric version, also fall into this category, although in this case, obtaining the ACC (Authorization to Drive a Moped) would be sufficient.

CNH Categoria B

Category B is the most common and covers the driving of four-wheeled vehicles, as long as their total weight does not exceed 3,500 kg and the number of occupants does not exceed eight, including the driver. The types of permitted vehicles include passenger cars, pickup trucks, SUVs, vans, vans and some types of light trucks, always respecting weight and occupant capacity restrictions. The Kombi, an automotive icon from the 70s and 80s and now renewed in an electric version, is also available to holders of a category B driver’s license.

CNH Categoria C

Category C is intended for drivers who wish to drive heavy cargo vehicles. According to the traffic legislation in force in Brazil, only those who have a category C driver’s license can drive cargo vehicles that have a total weight exceeding 3,500 kg, but not exceeding 6,000 kg, considering the vehicle and its attached unit.

CNH Category D

This category is aimed at those who intend to drive vehicles intended for the transport of passengers, where the capacity exceeds eight occupants, including the driver. The most typical examples are buses, vans and minibuses. If driving vans for professional purposes, it is mandatory to take a specific public transport course, available at driver training centers. To obtain a category D driver’s license, the driver must be at least 21 years old, have a category B driver’s license for two years or a category C driver’s license for one year, and have a clean record of serious or very serious infractions in the last 12 months.

Driver’s license Category E

Category E encompasses the driving of vehicles from all previous categories (B, C and D), and is specific to vehicles with a combined total weight exceeding 6,000 kg, including trailers, semi-trailers or trailers. It is worth mentioning that motorhomes, depending on their weight and capacity, can also be driven by drivers with a category B or D license.
