Researchers at MedUni Vienna have identified a new drug treatment option for peritonitis, a common and dangerous complication of peritoneal dialysis. Peritonitis is caused by bacteria that are becoming increasingly resistant to antibiotics. The research team analyzed blood samples and dialysis fluid from patients undergoing peritoneal dialysis and used computer-aided simulation models to determine the most effective dosage of ceftazidime and avibactam, which are antibiotics used to treat multi-resistant pathogens. The study found that a low dosage of 760 or 190 mg of the drug combination is sufficient to treat peritonitis. This is significant for dialysis patients to avoid accumulation of the substances and potential side effects. Peritonitis affects around 30 percent of patients undergoing peritoneal dialysis and can be life-threatening if left untreated. The findings of this study could help control peritonitis in patients with difficult-to-treat germs. With the increasing number of people needing renal replacement therapy, the researchers believe this research is particularly relevant. The study was published in the journal “Clinical Microbiology and Infection.”]
