The authority said the epicenter of the earthquake was located in the Pacific Ocean, about 300 kilometers east of the town of Vanimo, which is preparing to host Pope Francis over the weekend.
Earthquakes are common in Papua New Guinea, which lies above the “Pacific Ring of Fire” where tectonic plates meet, and their friction causes intense seismic and volcanic activity.
Although these earthquakes rarely cause major damage in these sparsely populated areas, they can lead to devastating landslides.
Pope Francis arrived in Indonesia this week, the first leg of a 12-day trip.
The Pontiff heads Friday to Christian-majority Papua New Guinea for a three-night visit that includes a brief stop in Vanimo, a remote coastal town located near the country’s border with Indonesia.
