The works started in the spring and ended in June, increasing the total bicycle infrastructure network of Riga by eight kilometers.

In the vicinity of Āgenskalns and Ķipsalas, bicycle infrastructure has been installed in the Ballast Dam section from Krišjāņa Valdemāra Street to Daugavgrīvas Street. It connects the bicycle route between Vanšu bridge and Uzvaras Park, where there was a break until now. Along with the new bicycle path, easy access to the future Prese nama quarter, the headquarters of AS “Swedbank”, as well as the Ķīpsala beach has been ensured. Bicycle lanes add 1.3 kilometers to the bicycle infrastructure network of Pārdaugava.

On the other hand, in the vicinity of Mežciems, bicycle infrastructure has been installed along the entire length of Gaiļezera Street. On Gaiļezera street, maintaining the existing number of lanes, two one-way bicycle lanes were installed, supplementing the existing bicycle infrastructure network by 1.1 kilometers.

In parallel with the introduction of bicycle infrastructure, other traffic calming measures have been taken on Gaiļezera Street – the permitted driving speed will be 30 kilometers per hour from now on, marking of parking spaces has been carried out, which will improve traffic safety by providing free zones before and after entrances, making exiting from neighboring areas safer.

The connection between the neighborhoods of Čiekurkalns and Mežaparks has been created by introducing bicycle infrastructure on Viskaļu and Ezermalas streets. Two one-way bicycle lanes have been installed on the mentioned streets, adding 5.6 kilometers to the existing bicycle infrastructure network. Bicycle lanes create a new neighborhood connection, as well as provide convenient and safe access to recreation areas and publicly important objects.

“We continue to work on the development of a comfortable and friendly infrastructure for cyclists in Riga, creating new connections both with the neighborhoods and the city center. The nearest plans also include the introduction of bicycle lanes and the improvement of the infrastructure on Purvīša Street, Dzirnavu Street and the 11.novembra embankment, where the existing section of the bicycle path will be extended ,” explains Olafs Pulks (JV), head of the Traffic and Transport Affairs Committee.

Also, work is being done on the introduction of trunk cycle routes in cooperation with neighboring municipalities.
