New Delhi: The central government on Thursday announced the names of two election commissioners. Former IAS officers Gyanesh Kumar and Sukhbir Singh Sandhu will now be the new Election Commissioners in the Election Commission. For this, a notification has been issued by the government. A three-member committee headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi selected Gyanesh Kumar and Sukhbir Singh Sandhu as Election Commissioners. Recently Arun Goyal had resigned from the post of Election Commissioner.

The selection panel has chosen Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Gyanesh Kumar as election commissioners. The panel included Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the leader of the opposition and a nominated Union cabinet minister. Senior Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury was included in the three-member panel as an opposition member. Apart from the Prime Minister and Congress leaders, Union Home Minister Amit Shah also attended the meeting. However, the Congress leader hit out at the Center over the law in which a Union Minister was included in the selection committee instead of the Chief Justice of India.

Let us tell you that Gyanesh Kumar is a retired IAS officer of Kerala cadre of 1988 batch. He has also served in the Home Ministry. At the time of the decision on Section 370, Gyanesh Kumar was posted in the Union Home Ministry. Apart from this, he has also held the post of Secretary in the Ministry of Cooperation. Sukhbir Singh Sandhu, born in 1963, is a retired IAS officer of 1998 batch. He has also been the Chief Secretary of Uttarakhand and Chairman of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI). Sukhbir Singh Sandhu has done MBBS from Government Medical College, Amritsar in Punjab.
